Peer Pressure

Peer Pressure can be great, it can motivate you to try new things you wouldn't think of doing on your own. Or, there may be things that you are afraid to do, but you do them because you are being encouraged/persuaded to try.

This day is turning out to be the day of Peer Pressure for me, both positive and negative.

Let's start with the positive, that's best!

Diane cut my hair today and I was really looking forward to that. She does such a nice job (I think). I was smiling as I walked into the salon because I knew she would flip over my glasses and want to give me a new doo to go with them.

I was right!

First it started off with the cut, doing something a little different with my bangs. I was into that!

Then I started telling her how Wild she was and she started telling me how Wild I was. Before I knew it she was mentioning color, and her eyes were getting all sparkley and she started foaming at the mouth (that last part is just editorial license).

That was the peer pressure. How could I say no to her? I knew she would be all over the new frames (won't be surprised if I see her in a pair next month when I go) so I just couldn't say no to her. And I like red. It was either a big red chunk or a big blonde chunk, so I went with the red. And we dyed the rest a nice chocolate brown. Now I'm a rock'n - way out there- chick and my 7 year old says its fabulous while the conservative 5 year-old gave it a thumbs down.

Then I went to the kids' school to see the content of the Sex Ed. curriculum that my DD will be learning next month. It was kind of spurring me on to start talking to her about womanly stuff, which was good. I want to be the one to talk to her, I want to have a tiny bit of CONTROL over what she is learning about her body and the human body.

Then I watched the videos.

I'm just real mad right now. Frustrated. Please don't take this the wrong way public school teachers/system (remember I was in that field once and I DO have sympathy), but some things concerning the educating of the masses just STINK!

Now don't get me wrong. I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with Sex Ed. BUT....and here's the BUT: When it comes to your own child, you want to have some CONTROL over the what, when, why and how of this education.

Thank you Public school system for telling me that 4th grade is the right time for not only the girls, but the boys to learn about women's menstrual cycles. Thank you Public school system for telling me that 5th grade is the right time for my daughter to learn about wet dreams.

Now, don't get me wrong here. I want my daughter to learn all about this stuff. It is so very important. But golly gee, what percentage of girls are having their periods at the end of 4th grade? Have things really changed that much since 1980 when only one girl in the 5th grade started hers?

I'm OK with my daughter learning about this now, although I would prefer it to be next year. I'm not opposed to my daughter learning about testicles, sperm, ejaculations and nocturnal emissions. But why does it have to be in the 5th grade? I can see the need for her to know it in the 6th, where you start seeing a greater % of kids starting to have sex. But how many boys are having wet dreams in the fifth grade? Please tell me, I've never been male so I really don't know? And, how many kids are having sex in the 5th grade?

I realize that public school is educating the masses. Therefore, whatever is happening to the masses dictates what most or all students learn. It's the shove everybody into one box theory.
People are indivuduals and cannot be shoved into one very small box, but as much as I detest this theory, I concede to the idea that peer pressure (majority % of student population) must win out over the minority. That's the essence of public education. What's best for most is what's best for you.

Therefore, if somebody somewhere can tell me that 20% ( I think that's a reasonable percentage) of girls start menstruating in the spring of their 4th grade year (9-10) years old, I'll stop with the Mama-Bear attitude and chill about it. If somebody somewhere can tell me that 5th grade boys become semen producers then I'll just have to chill about that too.

But right now, all I know, is that my daughter has to grow up, it's inevitable. I get that. Just don't tell me that because the nurse starts seeing one or two girls out of the entire 4th grade population starting their periods that all 4th grade girls and boys must learn about this highly anticipated event of nature.

Can't we just give our kids as many years of innocence as possible? I guess its just not that way anymore.

So, I'm not making my daughter opt out of the movie she's going to be shown because that's stupid. She'll hear it from everybody else, and hearing it is not the issue for me. The issue is the timing.

Enough said. And forgive my ranting, because I know I'm doing it. I'm just upset, disappointed, mad, and feel like someone's leading me around by the nose. Shoved me into a corner. And I'm starting to get grouchy, even barking at the kids. I need to vent, so guess what, you were just the lucky recipient to get dumped on. Now I'm going to go try to enjoy a rookie baseball game in the rain!

Some Days We Are Reminded Just How Small Our Giant World Really Is.....

Yesterday the craziest thing happened. I was at my flick'r page and noticed my new contact Pumpkin Shell's latest photos she had uploaded.

They looked strangely familiar.

I clicked on her flick'r page and enjoyed her beautiful new photos. I noticed how close her children were to the giraffe. I had seen this before.....

I noticed all the saguaros so close together on the backside of a mountain. I had seen this before....

I noticed a beautiful saguaro next to an adobe-style house. I had seen this before too....

And then.

And then it happened. Just a small picture. A church steeple actually. That's when I knew. Without looking at the tags, without getting confirmation from "Life in the Pumpkin Shell." I knew that she had been to my most favorite and special place in the world.

A small town in Southern Arizona.

She had been to my Grandmothers church. And it was her Grandmother's church.

What a small world.....

A new friend whose Grandmother almost certainly knew mine. She sang in the choir and mine made giant dinners for every church function. The choir especially loved her and so when she passed away the day after Thanksgiving this year, the choir did something they almost never do. They sang at her memorial.

And I was there.

Many faces, many friends, many people that had become family in this small retirement town, came through the receiving line. Some shook hands, some hugged....and almost all brushed away tears. So many wonderful things to say about my Grammies, so many memories, good meals and laughs.

Did I meet Pumpkin Shell's Grandmother? Did we pass each other in the grocery store and share a smile?

I really don't know. But I am reminded about that place I love the most and the wonderful memories.

I am reminded that many of us are connected in some loose, distant way. And, just how special our Grandma's are. View my slideshow (below) that I made in remembrance and read the captions that explain the wonderful memories that came through a difficult time. Maybe you will sense my loving tears that flowed as I watched my creation or viewed Pumpkin Shell's photos.

But please, ENJOY!!! (And go hug your Grandma if you have one)....

How Controlling Are You???

This past Sunday, my pastor (I call him rocket man) passed out a paper titled "Mankind: Power & Control" It listed 88 controlling behaviors and was published by the Abuse and Recovery Ministry & Services in Hillsboro, Oregon. Their list was adapted from the Men's Resource Center.

It says this: "Controling Behaviors- Listed below are some of the behaviors that can be used to control other people. As should be apparent, many of the behaviors below are not automatically controlling, but can be used to control others. This list is intended to help you become more aware of your own controlling behaviors, many of which you may not have been previously aware of."

Rocket Man said that people control for 3 reasons: fear, anger and power. Thinking about it, I would tend to agree. I think all of the behaviors I marked I probably do/did because of fear and anger. Those two things are hard to manage, I think.

I thought it might be fun to turn this list into a meme or whatever everyone else out there in Blogger-land calls it. So if you feel like copy & pasting the examples and posting your own responses on your blog, leave a comment anytime and let everyone who reads here know you've played, or just send me an e-mail. Hopefully you won't run far far away (oh wait, you are far away) after you read my responses. Have fun getting to know me anyway.

Don't forget to give credit to the Abuse and Recovery Ministry in Hillsboro, Oregon because that's where this list came from!

Letter to the Tooth Fairy

As some of you may remember reading, Max-Ay lost his tooth the other day when Uncle Noonie pulled it out. If you don't, you can read about it .

Anyway, as you can see in the letter, Max-Ay didn't put the tooth under his pillow for the tooth fairy because he went to spend the night at his uncle's house. By the time he got back, we couldn't find the tooth and forgot about the whole thing for a few days.

So last night, he starts getting concerned. Says that the tooth fairy hasn't come yet and asks what should he do, because he doesn't have the tooth! I suggest writing a letter explaining the situation and tell him that I hope she understands.

So he writes the letter, no help from Mom & Dad whatsoever, and sticks it under his pillow.

He goes to sleep, and Mom & Dad got to bed. I find out I might be the highest bidder on e-bay for a new Nikon Coolpix 8800 Digital Camera and completely forget about the tooth. Papa D does too, because once 8 pm rolls around, his lights automatically shut out!

This morning Max-Ay wakes up and searches and searches under and around the pillow for the cash. No cash. Nada/nothing. He can't find it. He seems frustrated and quite disappointed and I know I've let him down. Right about then, Papa D gives me a good morning hug and I whisper some directions in his ear.

Papa D disappears and soon some tape can be heard being torn off in the distance. I guess what is happening.....

At breakfast, Papa D asks Max to get the letter, because he didn't know anything about it and hadn't read it yet. As Max-Ay walks past me in the kitchen w/ a grumpy look on his face, I can see $1 (yes, we're cheapskates!) taped to the back of his letter. The kid doesn't notice a thing...his thoughts are on disappointment.

Seeing that Max-Ay knows nothing yet, Papa D very seriously says, "Let me read this letter. I didn't even know you wrote the tooth fairy a letter."

Papa D then, very conspicuously, holds the letter w/ the back facing Max-Ay.

"Dad, No Way, a $1!! How did that happen? The tooth fairy must have taped the $1 to the back of the letter. I don't know how I didn't see it! I looked and looked and looked for minutes and minutes!"

Papa D & I meet eyes and grin. Oh, to be 7 again!

Potatoes Anna & Recipes from Culinary in the Desert

Looks like my link highlighter isn't working again, so you will have to scroll over words to find the links, think of it as hide and go seek!

Last weekend I really rocked out in the baking department making dishes for a get-together w/ some friends from church.

First off was Potatoes Anna. It's a recipe I got from Mamasita about ten years ago, and I am posting it here by memory. Couldn't find the recipe, but turned out tastey!

Potatoes Anna

Ingredients:
1 lb. baby red potatoes
1-2 Tbsp. butter
1/4-1/2 tsp. kosher salt
fresh ground black pepper

Directions:
In medium sized baking dish or 8 in. pie plate, randomly place four thin slices of butter.

Wash potatoes and do not peel skins. Using a food slicer or sharp knife, VERY thinly slice all potatoes. Arange in circular fashion over butter. When you have completed one layer, place 4-5 more dabs of thinly sliced butter, sprinkle lightly with kosher salt and pepper. Continue placing potatoes in circular fashion and topping with butter, salt & pepper until all potatoes are used.

Bake in 350 degree oven for 30-40 min. or until top layer of potatoes are
light brown and crispy. Remove from oven and place large plate or serving platter over potatoe dish. Invert potatoes onto serving plate and serve warm. Serves 4-6.

*I haven't posted a pic here of finished product, just first 4 steps before baking.

**My food slicer purchased from the
Pampered Chef.
It is wonderful, slices cheese, carrots, tomatoes, potatoes, zuchinni, is extremely sharp, I cut myself first time using....BEWARE!

Recipes from
Culinary in the Desert . I didn't post pics here because Joe has wonderful pictures of these recipes on his blog, so check them out there!

First off was
Creamed Cauliflower with Herbed Crumb Topping that was absolutely to die for. You would not believe all the positive feedback I got from this dish. Cooked cauliflower is not something I eat that often, and everyone was surprised at how sweet the dish was. And there was no sugar! Just the cauliflower. Delicious and everyone is looking forward to my making it again. This was the first recipe I have ever stumbled upon when visiting Joe's site, and was waiting for the right opportunity to make it.

The other recipe I got from
Culinary in the Desert was Nutty Peanut Butter Caramel Bars. With only 9 adults at the gathering and 6 kids, there was not one piece of this dessert left to take home. The combination of Skippy Peanut butter, pecans, caramel and chocolate was heavenly. The picture on Joe's blog of this recipe does way more justice to the dessert than any I could have taken, so check the recipe out there.

Thanks to Joe for his awesome recipes!!!

Howard's Recipe & Photo Contest #2 Reminder

First of all, I have to say thanks to the people who have checked out my latest Blog. Some of you who have visited there may remember me referring to one of my Doctors w/ a funny term. I have edited that, but would still like to deliver on the promised story, just don't think I should post it on the WWW, as this would not be appropriate, especially if any of those recipes become some sort of cookbook! So, if you would like the story I was going to post, e-mail me @ cameradawktor@yahoo.com

Moving to the business of the day:
Howard over on thehowardblog, is a very nice bloke (hope that's a word for nice guy) who lives in Alexandria, Dunbartonshire, United Kingdom. That is a long ways away from me! Anyway, he has a great recipe on his blog, and even if you don't like recipes, it is quite funny! Go to his archives and look at his most recent post to see the picture that goes w/ the recipe.

Here's another reminder about the Photo Contest #2: Favorite Picture of your Spouse or Significant Other. Two early-birds have already submitted and posted their pictures on their blogs. You will have to explore my commenter's to figure it out or wait until Sunday, April 30th when the winner will be announced. Photo submissions by blog post have a deadline of midnight PST Thursday, April 28, 2006.

For photo contest rules go here:

BTFF: Auckland, NZ and the Bay of Islands

This picture describes how I felt during my last two weeks in New Zealand during the summer of '89: surrounded in beauty and alone.

The last family I stayed with lived in Auckland, on the North Island. Another school teacher Mum, a proud-bigotful Dad and two jerk-ass sons. As you can tell, I didn't like them much.

The whole family fought all the time. Very loud, and I wasn't used to that. We kept our anger "under-wraps" at our house growing up, and I wasn't used
to all the yelling, name calling and attitudes.

The Dad, I don't even remember his name, spent two weeks with me. I had to go to his Lions Club meeting because that was the Exchange group that I was with. Anyway, I didn't mind going and talking to those old guys. I like old guys and they are friendly and like cute young things. But this Dad, he introduces me by my middle name. Now, in "real life" I go by my first and middle names. So he was half right. But think about it, if your name is Madison Lee and everyone calls you Madison Lee all of the time, and then some jerk-off who has spent two weeks with you constantly calls you Lee. Well, it just makes you feel like a nobody. It did me, anyway.

The good part of the loneliness I felt there, was that it helped me get ready to go home. I loved Waipukurau, and didn't want to leave. In fact, a car salesman even offered me a job, and I seriously, w/ my 17 year-old brain, was thinking about it! I loved it there, loved it, loved it. But after getting to Auckland, and the family-from-Hell, I found myself longing for home. I even cried when I got off the airplane and saw Mom & Dad for the first time in 6 weeks. I guess that's not such a bad thing, for a teenager to miss HOME!!

The FFH did take me to do some fun things though. They had a trailer near
Mr. Ruapehu and went skiing often, so I got to do that. I haven't skiied in 15 years, but I enjoyed skiing then. I laughed when I saw this skiing photo of me, w/ total 80's plastic neon colored sunglasses!

The other thing we did, which I was so happy about, was go to the Bay of Islands. The islands in the Bay make up the tip of the North Island. There are dolphins there, but unfortunately I didn't see any.

We went to an island called Urupakupaku. I believe that is where the author Zane Grey had a lodge from which he fished. I was told on the tour I went on, that he loved it there. I could see why, it was so amazingly beautiful.

This one reminds me of the Skipperon Gilligan's Island. Mary Ann, where aaarrreee you????!!!!

I think this photo should be on the cover of Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man & The Sea.....

Duct Tape Dad on the LOOSE!! Children: BEWARE!!

I think this is a pretty funny video, let me know if you agree or not. Both opinions are encouraged. You will have to turn your head to the side, I didn't realize back in February when I took this that there was no way to rotate the screen when it was uploaded in the computer. Live and learn!!

A few things to know before you watch: 1) everyone was a willing participant 2) no one had hurt feelings when rampage was over 3) pants fell down by themselves 4) Papa D was trying to pull pants up, not down 5)Meyers D is not crying just using a whiney-laugh

6) and most importantly, I obtained Meyer D's permission to post this for the world....I was shocked. Her only stipulation was to not share the link with her teacher. She even said her friend's older brother could watch it, will wonder's never cease!!!!

For some reason UTube is not letting me embed video, so here's the link....enjoy! And try not to kink your neck trying to watch! HaHa!!

The Doctor Is Out!

As of two seconds ago I have yet another blog. For some of you that know about all of them, please don't say how many that brings me up to now.

Since my link highligher hasn't been working here. Click on HERE to go there. I don't want to bore all of you with all of my medical details. But I am feeling sad today and fluctuate in my feelings over my health, and just need a place where I can talk about it and encourage others who might do a google search and have similar problems.

So, this is officially the happy family, cameradawktor blog and the other one, well, is another side of the real me. Don't go there if you don't want to hear about it. Respect the fact that I am not whining HERE!!!! Maybe this will give you one more tiny clue as to why I call myself CameraDawktor, although there are many reasons.....

Two Front Teeth & Ice Cream for Dinner

Max-Ay lost one of his front teeth! The other one is loose and will be out soon. He sure was funny about it. His permanent two are already down quite a ways and we kept pestering him about getting that tooth out. He would fuss with it every now and then and insisted we not pull it out for him. It was all I could do to not yank it out when I was just "testing to see how loose it was."

I offered to tie a string around it and pull it out for him. I explained that this is how Poppy pulled my teeth out and that he told everyone stories about how he "lasooed" me, but alas, this was not enough to convine him.

I think that secretly, every kid really wants that tooth fairy money, wants mom or dad to pull it out but is too scared to admit it. Just in case I'm wrong, I try to keep my grubby hands off the
loose teeth unless they are invited!

All the tooth lasooing talk inspired this highly creative 7 year-old to do this:

Don't ask me where kids come up with some of this stuff. Maybe its the Fruit Loops I feed him for breakfast.

Anyway, don't tell your kids to try this at home, it doesn't work....what worked this time was an Uncle Noonie who asked for tooth pulling permission and didn't wait for an answer. There was a split second hesitation in Max-Ay's answer, which like I said, reveals his secret desire to have it out. He just wouldn't admit it, and Uncle Noonie knew that.

The rest of the day consisted of getting over my Dr. hang-ups, which didn't take me too long this time. Must be another sign that I'm getting mentally healthier. Also, Max-Ay took his Chopper over to Nate Dog's and spent the night. Meyers D got invited to spend the night somewhere too, it's Spring Break here.

And since it was just Papa D, T-S-E and me, we let the little guy choose
where to go out for dinner. He said Scoops, which is an ice cream shop. Now, this is Papa D's dream dinner-date, to have ice cream for dinner! We told T-S-E not to tell his sib's when they get home, but you are sure to bet what will be the first words to exit his mouth when they get home. Here are some pictures of our dinner, and sorry, the one of me is not so flattering. Almost prefer my "pain self-portraits" to this trashy shot!

Doctor Visit Update and Doggie Hunt Video

As Nick [emery] just stated on his comment in the previous Dr. Visit post, "Sometimes Dr.'s can suck a duck." I'm sad to say, that's what happened today.

The good part is, my migraine went away right before I got there so I didn't need any type of pain shot. But I obviously still have an issue, and still need some answers. Also, I was hoping for a new percocet perscription, this time for the migraines and not for the kidney stones.

Anyway, this chick comes in (supposedly she's a Dr.) and seems interested, asking me what's helped in the past and what's not. She very quickly and readily agrees to the Percocet, which is nice. She then says, to take up the matter later with my regular physician. That he will follow up. As I'm not done, and still have plenty to talk about, I start telling her how that during my monthly cycle (sorry guys...) I have a terrible streak. That I need testing for my hormones, to see how they fluctuate and what best would address that, because clearly it is a HUGE factor and problem. She suggests birth control pills, which I may, at some point accept, but she's using it as a band-aid. I want to know WHAT THE H*c@! IS GOING ON WITH MY BODY. Find out what my body needs and give me that. The birth control is all trial and error I tell her, try this, if it doesn't work, try that.

She says hormones are hormones, they go up and down. DUHHHH! Did she learn anything in med school? It's to the degree that they shift at different times, how quickly they peak and how quickly they drop off that causes the problems. That's what I want to know about. She says only Naturopaths do that. She spends 4 minutes with me. 4 minutes. She repeats herself 5 times, take this matter up with your regular physician. She doesn't even have any encouragement or suggestions for things that could help me that I could discuss with my regular doctor.

I am fighting back the tears. Papa D speaks up and says that obviously my hormones are a problem because she should have seen how miserable I was yesterday. I don't remember what else he said, he was nice, but clearly upset. I appreciated that. She again says that some women experience worse migraines during their cycle. DUHHHH! She says this: "You came here for a percocet refill and I am giving you one."

Well then....isn't that fine and dandy. However lady, you who call yourself a Dr., I did not only come for a Percocet perscription. I came for 20 minutes of your time, not 4. That's what you schedule me for, that's what I expect. During that 20 minutes I would Hope that you would suggest a list of different things that I could try/check-out/think about before I discuss it later with my regular physician. I don't expect her to cure me, I don't expect her to take the place of my regular Dr., I do expect her to at least act like she cares.

The feeling I get over and over from the Dr.'s I've seen, even the Neurologist who I will never see again, is that they frick'n don't know why some people get so many migraines, don't know how to test for different types of migraines, don't know what medicines will work and what will not until you've become a human guinea pig and t ried all of them, endured all of their side-effects.

I was able to hold back the tears until I left the office. Then, as Papa D encouraged, I let them go. And I let them go at my parents house when we picked up the kids. Mamasita gave me a big hug because she saw I was hurting. And I appreciated that and received it from her because it was a very loving gesture.

So, I will visit the OBGYN and see if she will test my hormones, if not, it's money out-of-pocket for the Naturopath, but I think we're ready for that. Maybe with the money from the sale of our rental house we can afford that. Also, I'll see the regular physician who says he doesn't even know if what I have IS migraines.....yah, he really said that. Anyway, I'll see him despite his lack of knowledge of my condition. I'll give him a chance and see if he will send me to the headache clinic. They should know a thing or two there. In the meantime, I'll survive this monthly cycle. Enjoy my day today even though I feel a little hung-over from all the drugs. Appreciate my children's smiles and voices which I couldn't appreciate yesterday.

To start the fun and enjoyment, when I got home from the Dr.'s office, the neighbor called and someone lost their Beagle right as they were leaving for the airport for a week-long Spring Break Trip. What fun! A Beagle Hunt. We packed up a sack-full of frozen liver treats. Leashed up the Boxer as "doggie-sniffing bait" and set off down the street for the hunt. The neighbors had leftover Sloppy Joe meat, but Tucker liked the liver treats better. After 45 min. he was caught and is now in transport to Doggie Daycare for the week and the unhappy travelling family is being notified of the rescue. Our reward is happy children who still have a dog, and happy children who enjoyed the thrill of the hunt. Here's a retell video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uk6AWAEq5UQ

Things are looking up already. Thanks so much for your encouragement. Your support, and even your prayers. I will climb this mountain of doubt and continue to Hope that one day someone somewhere will be able to help me improve my quality of life a little more than its been improved over the last 5 months. I really don't think that's asking too much. Again, thanks so much and I'll move on to happier subjects!!

Doctor Visit

For having spent one day every week for 7 years of my childhood in the Doctor's office, going to the Doctor should be no big deal for me. But the funny thing is, the more serious I get about pushing them to do something about my migraines, the more I realize that I have anxiety about going. I have this giant fear, completely irrational, that they will look at me and say, "Ya know, we really don't see that you have a problem here." Or, "Yah, you got a problem but there just isn't anything we can do to help you."

Now, after all the Hope talk yesterday that may come as a surprise that I would think these things. Don't get me wrong, I do have Hope, but it doesn't just plop in my lap. I have to fight for it. Struggle for it. Wrestle w/ negative thoughts like I just described to get it.

The pain started getting uncomfortable about 3 a.m. again. I was imagining the Dr. laughing at me, me blowing up at him and filing a complaint to get him fired.

Then, I was imagining him saying, "I really don't think these are migraines, but I don't know what they are. Go on home, you already took your Imitrex shot, you already took your Butalbital and you already took your Percocet. Nothin' else I can do for you Ma'am. Go on home and wait it out."

I did a very smart thing. I woke Papa D up and told him that I needed a hug. That I was imagining negative stuff that probably won't even happen. He understands that I get that way sometimes, partly because I was offered help a long time ago and it was turned down. Don't get me wrong, that most likely wouldn't change the facts of my condition now, but it may have made a big difference in how I feel about their ability to help me.

Sometimes I feel like they just don't want to try hard enough to figure out what's going on with me.

Sometimes I feel like they really don't have a freakin' clue, so there's no wonder why they are not helping me.

Sometimes, and this one is the biggie really, I feel like they have answers, and have had them all along. Like they are dangling the carrot before the horse and keeping it just far enough away for the horse to keep moving, never letting it take a bite.

With all of that said, I'm going to the Doctor this morning. I've never seen this lady before, but I really don't care. I just need to get rid of this migraine, hopefully get more Percocet (I have the perscription for Kidney Stones, yah, I know, I've got that too!) and if I'm real lucky and the wind's blowin' right, I may even get a referral to a headache clinic. Man, do you think I'm a candidate for that or what?! I had went to see my old Doctor, the Chinese one, about 15 or more times for migraines and he NEVER TOLD ME ONCE THAT OUR INSURANCE COMPANY EVEN HAD A PAIN CLINIC, LET ALONE A HEADACHE ONE. Now that really pisses me off. Especially, because back then, I had some form of headache every single day. I just don't get these people.

I'm nervous, will probably hold Papa D's hand real tight, will get sweaty palms, fast heartbeat and need to wear 3 layers on top because I'll feel cold.

But I am going. When I get doubtful, I'll ask Papa D to tell me the Truth about my situation, which is that I have Hope. He'll drive me there because I've taken too much drugs now and can't get behind the wheel. He'll hold my hand because he is my friend, my bestest and most closest friend in the whole world, and he cares about me. He'll kiss me on the cheek because he knows I need to be encouraged and loved. He'll speak up for me if I whimp out and don't tell the Doctor the whole truth about the situation. And, he'll even speak up and say, "You HAVE to do something for her." I love this man. Can you believe I ever flushed my Ring down the toilet? http://troublealwayshasadoor.blogspot.com/2006/02/ring.html

Anyway, now that I 'm really getting honest you probably won't want to come back. But I don't care. This is my Blog and even if another person never read it I feel better for have stated the Truth as I see it from my short/little viewpoint.

Say prayers for me, wish me luck, send virtual hugs and I will let you know how it went. In Faith I'll just say that this latest "episode" wasn't an accident, I really need to meet this lady Doctor and she'll have one more piece to this crazy puzzle that I need. Amen to that!!

Wrestling in Bad Shit....Who's Going to Win, Pain or Hope?

*If at any point in reading this point you don't want to hear what I have to say, by all means go somewhere else more chipper. I'm not trying to be a downer, just REAL. My pain hasn't been this bad since last summer, so there's going to by typos and things that don't make sense. But the mind gets sluggish on drugs and pain, so leave now if you are not in the mood. However, I'm not in the mood for it either. So why don't you just deal with it like me!

My tears are on the inside today. But I'm sure, that sometime during the course of this post, that they will surface. And I think that's good.

It's strange, but sometmes i think the healing that comes in our lives comes in waves. I think I've made a break-through, and then months or even a year later the same issue surfaces, but i'm able to deal with it on a deeper level.

It's like what Shrek said about himself, that he's like an Onion-He has layers. I've realized that our emotions are like that....and eventually I'll get to the middle of my onion, until there isn't a layer yet to unlayer.

but today there is.

It's been really strange the last few days. I've had two migraines, but even when the migraine was gone, I found myself smack-dab in the middle of a memory, or more correctly, memories....and the pain that surrounds them.

The other night I swear, I could literally reach out and touch it with my fingers. It was so there, right in front of my face. One minute life as usual and the next minute sadness/grief/loneliness, uninvited, unwanted, yet present with me like an unwanted WART!

There have been so many times that I have been able to do nothing else than to lay in my bed and deal with my pain. For hours, and hours, and sadly to say, even days.

I don't say this to make anyone feel sorry for me.

I say this because it is the truth. And unfortunately, sometimes its my reality, although only intermittent. The fortunately part is that I'm getting about 60% less than I was 5 months ago. Hence, the Blog.

Off the bunny-rabbit trail now: What the memory was the other night, was how this suffering felt to me as a young child. About the age of my daughter. Granted the pain didn't last as long then, and I could go to sleep and wake-up pain free. But it was the laying in bed waiting for sleep to come that is the painful part.

O.K. tears, I welcome you.

These were dark times. And they might not have been so dark then, but they grew into darker times.

I used to wish, as I laid there in bed, with my 9/10 year-old self, that I was dead.

I used to pray, so hard, and so ferverently and with such conviction that God would let me die right then and there. Now maybe they were innocent and childlike thoughts, but unfortunately for me, they eventually grew into an ingrained way of thinking when I was experiencing this chronic pain.

I don't think that way now. At least since September, which may not seem very long since that was 26 years of thought patterns, I have not even remotely had any thoughts like that whatsoever. Even right now, having as much pain as I did last summer when my thoughts really spun out of control, I don't have those thoughts. And as much as I hurt, and hurt that even the whispers and footsteps of my well-behaved children drive me to tears, I have peace.

So what's the change? Did I find religion? No, I already had that. Did I find faith in something bigger than myself? Well, that may be getting closer, but I honestly know I had that too. Part of the difference is Hope. Hope that something will help me. Hope that someone will help me. Hope that my loved ones will insist that I be helped.

The layer that's getting unpeeled right now (and really, that's a statement of faith...that I'm not suffering for nothing) is this: coming to terms with some things that I just don't understand, and, which inadvertantly evolved into emotional suffering during my physical suffering. (***First I have to interject, don't think I'm morbid but I don't think our lives will ever be free of suffering. I believe that we are promised suffering, but hope to overcome. So if anyone is thinking about encouraging me right now that we could be, should be, or ever will be suffering-free,....don't. If I wasn't suffering with migraines it would be something else, at some other point in my life. Suffering can cause us to need a Hope, and that's not a bad thing. Sometimes we people are stubborn and will only search out a Hope if we suffer. OK, off the preaching platform now.)

See, here's how it is and was for me, I'll just lay it out. Migraines weren't my only problem as a kid. I had another chronic health issues that required weekly medical attention. I got that medical attention, my needs were met, I was well-cared for. And I was pretty little. Between 7 and 8 years old. Now what I'm about to describe didn't happen on purpose, wasn't meant to be malicious, hurtful or depressing....it was done w/ love and all the best intentions in the world...to protect me. But unfortunately I've realized, that it did just the opposite. It encouarged me not to Hope.

Here's how it went: I was walking into the specialist's office after a year of treatments. The treatments could have been worse, but they were painful for me and every week when I went in, I had to play mind games with myself to handle the pain. That's O.K., I was coping and learning. Other kids would freak out. I saw them scream, yell and freak out. I on the other hand, stayed cool, O.K. maybe I was just keeping the same thing inside....but I didn't create a scene.

Anyway, after a year of treatments we went to the specialist to check on my progress and see if I had "graduated" and if the treatments could stop. On the way in the door I said, "Do you think Dr. so-and-so will say I won't ever have to come back?" I said this with Hope, but also with fear because I really didn't want to have another year of treatments.

Smiling, holding my hand, and very compassionately as not too see me crushed in disappointment, I was very kindly told (please don't misinterpret, I am NOT being sarcastic), "Don't get your hopes up."

Best of intentions, and on one hand, very good advice. But I've realized, that Hope is a very dangerous thing to lose. It's a very dangerous thing to give up in order to handle up-coming disappointment. And for me, because other problems were to come, which granted, no one could foresee....I desperately needed that Hope. Don't get me wrong. I don't think I should have been lied to, or appeased with sugar-coated words, like: "Oh probably, I can't imagine Dr. so-and-so saying anything else." Or: "You've been doing so well, he probably will say that."

I won't say what I wish was said. Because it didn't happen. Because people are people, and they can't predict or foresee the future. No one knows the right thing to say at every time. And I know, for a fact, that I've said the wrong thing many times. I'm not being negative, vindictive, slanderous or unforgiving. I'm just laying out what happened....

What I do know, is that "Don't get your hopes up," combined with, "Yes, Doctor, she has migraines but I don't think they are bad enough to require medicine yet," became a very toxic combination when I NEVER got any medicine to help with the migraines. (Until now, even though they are hit and miss and not always dependable.)
This is where the pattern started of pain-laying in bed-here goes the suffering again-no one is going to help me-nothing will take away this pain-there is no Hope that someone will help you with this pain cycle started.

Fast forward to today: As I laid in my bed a few minutes ago, I had Hope that within the next few hours or day that I will be pain free. I had Hope that even if it gets worse and I can't handle it that my husband will take me to the Doctor and say "Damn it, this is ridiculous, get this lady some help." Oh, do you know what a wonderful feeling that is? It brings tears of Joy to know that he will hold my hand and fight for me. No, he can't save me, and the Doctor's can't save me....but knowing he will do that for me is so wonderful, so healing, and helps me endure.

I am so grateful. So grateful that I have Hope. So appreciative that I have it because it is such a dark thing to be without. I've learned that suffering people want someone to hold their hand, someone to hold them up when they can't stand, someone to kick some ass until answers are at least searched for, someone to love them when they don't handle their suffering with grace and most importantly, someone to say with them: This sucks, I hate it too, this isn't fair but we have to Hope there is an end and we'll find it together.

Ahhh....there it was. The words I wanted to hear. Did you see how they slipped out? That caught me by surprise too
...."THIS SUCKS, I HATE IT TOO, THIS ISN'T FAIR BUT WE HAVE TO HAVE HOPE THAT THERE IS AN END AND WE'LL FIND IT TOGETHER."

***I took at least 5 more hand-held Specialist trips before I finally heard: "You're done now, you don't have to go through another year of weekly treatments." Each trip was hard, each trip was disappointing, and each one got a little more discouraging. BUT, and this is a good but, now I make my trips with Hope and when I feel week, I take DH with me to say things I have difficulty saying for myself. But I never go without my Hope and I never leave w/out it either, no matter what I'm told by the Doctor.

I'm going to go back to bed now, to my heating pad, Tiger Balm, peppermint oil and maybe even some Percocet. I'll enjoy the peace and quiet until DH gets back with the kids from bike riding. And fortunately, he's taking them to Portland to watch my nephew play basketball @ Portland State: 12 all-star players from Washington & Oregon play against each other and he has been selected as one of them, even with a knee injury. I will stay home and take care of myself. What is so hard on a day like today, is that my very sweet, well-behaved children have fun without me. That they see me cry. That even the potato chip bag being closed three rooms away makes me cringe. That their muffled voices and noises outside under my bedroom window bring me to tears. The peace and quiet helps so much and I am lucky to have a DH that recognizes that and will move heaven & earth to give it to me.

I sense that another layer is being peeled away today. This is a good thing, my kids need me to be free. Maybe they won't see me free of pain, but free of Hopelessness. Part of me says,"Damn it, that's a shitty thing for them to learn." But the other part of me says, "What an important lesson for them to learn."

Lastly, I'm not finger-pointing. I'm not saying it's some person's fault for saying/not saying something I felt should/shouldn't have been said or that someone's words and actions screwed me up.

I'm not saying that at all.

What I'm saying is that I suffer, we all suffer, and if I didn't suffer in this way, it would be another.

I'm not saying I'm mad, although I do find myself a little sad sometimes. I do think that there's some things that I don't understand. I am saying that each and every one of us has Shit to deal with, this happens to be mine, yours is different, but its Shit none-the-less. Really, its what we do with the Shit, or what we don't do with it that makes or breaks us, that makes or breaks our children. It's how our kids see us wrestle out our feelings as we come to terms with it in a somewhat healthy way.

Why would I share all this? 1.) I KNOW others hurt and I hope those hurting people will read this and know that they are not alone, and be encouraged. 2.) This is part of my life, fortunately not the ONLY part of my life anymore, but a part non-the-less. I have to cope and writing is such a good way to process. The Percocet has now made me loopy and numbed it somewhat but my heart feels at rest because I know my suffering today is producing something good in my life.

Hold it, did I just say that? Boy that's really sick & twisted but its true....today anyway.

Not trying to get "preachy" on 'ya but if you've read this far, then I'll leave you with this. I think it is true to my situation at this very moment:

"....Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted,...." Mathew 5:4 (The NIV Bible)

Future Actor or Poisoned by Hair Gel?? You Decide....

I know that this is going to sound extremely lame, but a few months ago I accidentally discovered that my digital camera can take movies. Dah..... I know, but I never read the instruction manual, just experiment. The sad thing is that I've had the camera for 3-4 years!

My second movie I shot was this one. Note that everytime "Harold" looks to the left, he is looking at himself in the mirror. I think his best acting and dancing comes when he is looking at himself in the mirror.

I was fixing his hair before school when this random improv occurred.

All of these photos were very creative and wonderful. I encourage all the photographers in this contest to continue on, Your work is great! And always remember for us as artists, the joy is in the process!

Seriously, on a somber note: I really owe all my blogging-ness to PtheClown. His day job is a
rock'n sheetrock expert. He came over to the "7th Dimension" and inspired me by his ability to find Art in the Everyday, as I call it. For the first time, I picked up my camera and started taking pictures of random stuff....and my brain went flying! I started having so much fun that I wanted to share my artwork. But who cared? So I started this blog. Even though I had never read a blog and had no clue about html crap, I started one. So thanks my big PP! Woops, that sounds raunch!
PtheClown is one of my two Big Brothers I have adopted. He is such a great, caring person. Extremely intelligent and thoughtful, easy to talk to, and you don't just talk to P about the weather. It's life....faith...family...and Survivor and American Idol! This guy is a rock star. He's toured with two bands and has seen a lot of the world. But, he would lay everything down....fame/fortune/etcetera/etcetera for his integrity, two little funny-faced clown girls and their Mama. Truly an inspiration. Please check 3 links in the sidebar: 2 for ptheclown and 1 for Albert Art.com

The three following pictures involve his next creative project, which he promises to "link me up to" as soon as they're on the web: so stay tuned.

I Think I May Skip Church Tomorrow......

*update 4/2/06, this was an April Fool's Joke!

I think I may skip church tomorrow. I don't normally do that unless one of the kids is sick, but I was passing by yesterday and noticed the topic for the service this week.

I'm not sure this is something I am ready to hear:

I just pray my husband didn't already notice what the topic is, he's sure to drag my ass there!!

Maybe with the time change we will sleep late. I can only hope.....
